Home Visits

Doctor's bag

If your illness prevents you from attending the surgery, a home visit may be arranged by telephoning 01307 462316. Except in emergencies, please phone before 10:00am on the day of request if at all possible, and as part of our triage, the reception staff will ask you some details of your problem as this will allow the doctor to plan the visits and take any necessary equipment along. Please remember to give the patient's name and full address. Visit requests received after 10:00am may be scheduled for another day.

Home visits are performed at the GPs discretion and are only for those who are too frail or ill to come into the surgery.  Your GP will only visit if they feel your medical condition warrants this, they will also decide the timescale for the visit.

Currently Academy Medical Centre performs a significantly higher number of home visits than other equivalent practices. This means that less GP’s are available for appointments in the surgery.

If you request a home visit the Case Manager may need to call you to get some more information if needed. You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP.

Visits are usually 10:00am-13:00pm, (although a GP may attend at other times of day) during which time GPs can only visit up to a maximum of 5 patients. In the same timeframe in the surgery (for appointments scheduled from 11:00 to 13:00) GPs could see 12 patients for 10 min face–to–face consultations, or talk to 24 patients for 5 min telephone consultations.
